Hu|mi|dor Container with constant [tropical] air humidity for storage or stocking of cigars.

Why a humidor?

Cigars are a special good. Each high quality cigar is a unique piece of art due to the combination of tobaccos and the processing; it is very sensible and therefore has to be protected.

A humidor has the ideal climate for storing cigars and helps to maintain the quality. It is a must for each cigar enthusiast and owner.

How to decide for the right humidor

The humidor market has a large variety. But still, the original sense of a humidor to maintain the quality of a cigar should be in the foreground.

The following factors should be considered for a humidor:

The humidor should always be made of wood. Modern work materials like metal or acrylic may look optically more attractive but they have a lot of climate-technical disadvantages. The interior should mainly be of cedar wood, because cedar besides its noble appearance has excellent climatically characteristics and avoids mold fungus.

An efficient humidification system should generally be integrated into the humidor to guarantee air humidity of approx. 70%. This way, the cigars wonât dry out and the quality is maintained. The air humidity should be controlled with an automatic control to avoid humidity fluctuation.

To humid all cigars evenly, a circulation of the air humidity by a ventilator should exist.

Lighting in boards and rooms. It is important that the lighting does not develop too much heat. UV-free light should be used as well to avoid bleaching of the cover leafs.

Temperature in a humidor. The absolute necessity of cooling in a humidor has to be checked individually. A cigar should not be cooled too much because it will loose its taste. We suggest a temperature of 20° C.

Smaller temperature variations can be absorbed by correct air humidity. Even if there is a large a fear of the tobacco hornworm, too much cooling can damage the cigars because it has a dehumidifying effect.

The Lasioderma serricorne grows at temperatures of 15 – 30° C and its incubation time is approx. 70 days. Regular control of the goods seems more suitable than exaggerated cooling.

Today, even brand goods are frozen to kill the tobacco hornworm before their export. This is a very sensible process that has to be executed in a controlled manner because otherwise, the cover leafs could tear off.

These are the points to be considered. Additionally, the humidor can be equipped with many other features that can make life easier.
